Insurance Update

Today I heard from CHOP regarding our request for a second implant. Ian's private insurance will cover 80% of the implant. CHOP is waiting to hear back from our state medical assistance for the rest. This is so exciting! Hopefully we will know soon. It would be a great Christmas present!

Great news!

Would you mind sharing how your request for a second implant was addressed by the team at CHOP? I'm curious as I'm thinking ahead to potentially wanting a second for our daughter.

Thanks!

Have you heard of the Let Them Hear Foundation? They helped us battle our insurance company for our daughter's second CI, and we won. She was implanted at 11 months with her first CI and age 3 for the second. We're now 12 months post the second CI. Her word recognition is fantastic, even whispers, and her speech is beautiful. No regrets.

Jennifer,
I contacted the secretary at CHOP and she told me to contact the coordinator. I called her and left a message, but never heard back. I then proceeded to contact everyone with whom we had contact. This included our audiologist, speech therapist, surgeon's office, social worker etc. When the coordinator finally called me back, it was about 2 weeks later and she told me that they discussed Isaac at their Tuesday meeting and they didn't see any reason why they couldn't proceed with the 2nd implant. After this, they then need to get insurance approval. We are still in that process. Some insurance companies may require another hearing aid trial and more audiological test. I don't know if ours does yet or not. We are still waiting to hear back. If you are interested, I would suggest contacting your audiologist and the coordinator. I got the most feedback from the audiologist. I hope that answeres some questions! Let me know if you need more info. Good luck with your decision making process!

Thanks for the info, Shiloh! We're only 6 months out from Carys's implant (she'll be 2 in April) so I feel like we have time to think it through, but I really appreciate you sharing your experience. Maybe CHOP is getting less conservative? Interesting!

We go in for Carys's next appt in January so I'll float the idea out and see what kind of response we get.

Keep us posted, ok?

Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas! :)
